5.5 The Route to Brighton

If Jenny’s father and uncle grew up in very different circumstances from those Carol describes for James, all three of these men nonetheless underwent a profound rupture in the otherwise predictable patterning of their lives as a result of World War Two. David and James had set up new families by the end of that war, but the losses and the trauma that it, and the previous war, had inflicted became woven into the ways of life that were played out within those new families. As Chap. 1 explained, these were the backgrounds we each of us brought to our meeting in Brighton in 1995. In what follows Jenny goes on to describe the years leading up to 1939 and what this meant for her father and late uncle.
