Chapter 14

Ally

With a flush on my cheeks, I add what I now call my “orgasm painting” to the collection of works I have in my studio. The evening sun casts a golden hue into the room, a hidden haven I’ve carefully kept away from the world. Brushes, canvases, and the sweet scent of paint fill the air. This is my sanctuary, where my dreams and aspirations manifest on canvas.

After last night, I’ve been itching to paint again. I’m lost in the strokes of color, the dance of my hand against the canvas, when the door creaks open. Startled, I turn to see James standing in the doorway, his expression a mix of surprise and awe.

“Ally,” he says, looking surprised. He’s holding a small USB thumb drive. “I wanted to return this to you and you weren’t picking up, so I decided to bring it here. The door was open, and I was concerned. I heard a sound and followed it here.”

My eyes widen. Was I that lost in thought?

“I had no idea you had a secret studio,” he says, his eyes scanning the artwork that adorns the walls. “I’m sorry.”

I shake my head and walk to him. “No, it’s fine. Better you than my sister. She’d kill me if she found out I left our door open.”

“Well, I closed it behind me. It’s an automatic lock right?”

I nod. “Yeah, it is.”

He looks around, an impressed look on his face. “Wow. This is… this is beautiful,” he says.

A blush creeps up my cheeks as I hastily wipe my hands on a cloth. “It’s a place I’ve kept to myself. A place where I let my creativity flow.”

He walks closer, studying each painting with interest. “Ally, this is… wow.” He looks genuinely short of words, and my heart leaps. “You’re incredibly talented.”

A mix of emotions washes over me—gratitude, vulnerability, and a faint flicker of hope. Hope that maybe, just maybe, my dream of being an artist could see the light of day.

“You really think so?” I ask hesitantly.

“Absolutely!” he replies. I watch him as his hands delicately trace the lines in my drawings. Then he moves to me and cups my face. “I don’t know if you’d like to hear this, but I think you’d be wasting your talent if you don’t chase this dream.”

I sigh, avoiding his gaze. “I can’t.”

“You can’t or you won’t?” he asks stubbornly.

“It’s hard to explain,” I say, making my way out of my secret room.

He follows me out. I close the door and pull the curtain over it. I can see him glance back as we make our way to the living room. I take the bag in his hands and look inside to find some of my clothes and underwear.

“Thanks for bringing this over,” I tell him with a grateful nod. “Would you like something to drink?”

But instead of a pleasant smile, he’s frowning. “You’re doing it again,” he says, sounding hurt.

“Doing what?”

“Changing the topic just because it’s uncomfortable.”

“Isn’t that why people change topics?”

He sighs. “I don’t do that with you though.
