Emma’s having to check up on one patient in the oncology department turned into several, along with answering a bunch of questions the interns had for her. By the time she got through all her tasks, her shift was over.

The sun had already set, and after grabbing her tote bag from her locker she made for the exit. Then she changed her mind at the last minute. Before leaving, she wanted to check on the free clinic. They must have closed by now, but if there were any patients still left to see, she wanted to ease the load.

Her heart stuttered inside her chest when her thoughts turned to Mark. There were at least five things she could list off the top of her head that she wanted to do on her days off. None of them involved leaving her house, and most of them were some form of sleeping. The long hours she worked at the hospital were tiring, leaving her like an empty husk most of the days.

Yet Mark went there on his day off, because he realised that the people who came needed help only a trained physician like himself could give.

The sheer kindness and generosity of such an act weakened Emma’s knees. Something she was trying to avoid at all costs. Because that would add another layer to her attraction. Another layer that made things so much more complicated.

She didn’t want complicated. She wanted simple. Her move to Rochester was less than a month away now, and she was just learning to be by herself.

Her work in the oncology department was teaching her so much about the different conditions her patients presented, and how they coped with their diagnoses. It was strengthening her own resolve over her potential diagnosis. She wasn’t ready to know yet, but she was determined to stick to her plan.

The way Mark spoke about his late wife had made her realise she couldn’t let anyone get close to her until she’d figured her condition out for herself. By the sound of it, he and Claire had had their whole life planned out, only for her to be snatched away in an instant. Though while he now shared his memories of Claire more freely, Emma detected no hidden hurt underneath his words. After losing her mother, she’d thought the pain would never go away. It still hurt sometimes, often in the most innocent of moments, but those times became rarer as life went on.

The lights were still on when she approached the door of the free clinic, but as she entered she didn’t see anyone at the admissions desk or in the patients’ area. Had someone forgotten to turn off the lights?

As Emma walked around, looking for the light switch, she spotted Mark sitting at a table at the far end of the clinic, engrossed in whatever was in front of him. For a moment she hesitated, unsure whether she should approach him. Seeing him here had suddenly filled her with dread, and she was worried about what he might have to say about their kiss.
