Chapter Twelve

Flynn

“Hey boss, come out here!” Ellie’s voice held a measure of urgency and Flynn straightened abruptly from where he was examining a pony’s leg.

“What’s up, El?” he asked, eyeing the young woman.

“It’s Gabe,” she said, a little breathless. Flynn groaned inwardly.

“Oh God, what now?” he asked. “Is she off again?” He’d known she’d be there that morning and had made a point of staying out of her path. After dinner with her family that week, he’d found himself awash with warring emotions.

“No…just, come look!” Ellie persisted, coming up and tugging at his arm. Reluctantly Flynn followed her through the yard to the jumping arena, Scout loping along beside him. Dom’s voice was ringing out through the Saturday morning bustle.

“Right, line him up…that’s good…yeah… Now keep the leg on. Leg on… I said leg on!” Flynn recognized the usual drill of coaching instructions that invariably went with a riding lesson. None of it made sense unless you were the poor fool on the horse – and even then, it was sometimes impossible to keep up.

In the arena, Buddy was cantering at a steady pace, and on board, Flynn recognized the crimson braid he’d grown to equate with the maddening woman who’d rattled his world lately. Dom had set out a small course of jumps. Not intimidating by any stretch of the imagination, but certainly more complex than Gabrielle should be capable of at her level of riding. Flynn frowned.

What the hell is Dom thinking? There was no way she was ready for this.

Gabrielle had a steady hand on the reins and a clear eye on the line of jumps. If he hadn’t known better, he’d never have guessed this was the same person he’d seen fumbling about just a few weeks earlier.

“Okay, now over the upright,” Dom was calling, “don’t grab him in the mouth. Steady…straighten…Leg…leg…keep your leg on!” Buddy gathered himself up and barreled toward the jump, ears pricked, expression keen. The pony was having a blast. Flynn gritted his teeth and tried not to flinch as the horse reached the jump and launched himself into the air. Gabrielle soared with him, whooping as he cleared the poles by a foot, landing smoothly on the other side. Dominic was already directing her to the next jump, and she swiveled her head like a pro.

What the...?

How had she learned to sit so well? He ran his eyes down the line of her body. Her position was near perfect. That took practice…or talent.

“Isn’t she doing great?” Ellie was saying beside him. She turned shining eyes up to Flynn’s face.

“When did she learn to ride like that?” he asked her.

“Dunno,” said Ellie. “Just born with it, I guess.” Buddy had flown over the next jump and a chorus of cheers rang out ringside, where Catherine, Marilyn and the twins were watching the ride.

“Go, Gabe! Looking like a champ!” shouted Catherine. Flynn stepped closer, looping his arms over the top of the railing and resting a booted foot on the bottom rung.

“Well, I’ll be…” he muttered.
