SADIKI AND GAMADA WATCHED the women and their beasts fade into the distance. As soon as they disappeared Gamada gathered his weapons. The stocky man did a quick inspection then signaled Sadiki.

“Let’s go,” he said.

“No,” Sadiki replied.

Gamada glared at the lanky Swahili then shrugged.

“Allah be with you,” he said, then started walking away.

“Wait!” Sadiki called out. “Don’t you realize where they’re going?”

“I don’t know, and I don’t care,” Gamada said. “I’m alive and I plan on staying that way.”

Sadiki held up the bag that contained parts of the lizard-like beast they had slain.

“That woman and her beast are probably from the same place the mamba came from.”

The creature was not a mamba, but Sadiki had no other name for it.

“That means there are more of them.”

“And more of her, too,” Gamada retorted. “And with the other woman and that simba, that’s too much for me.”

“We don’t have to fight them. All we need to do is follow them.”

Gamada stopped then turned.

“And then what?”

“We report back to Bwana Jabili and let him know. I’m sure he can gather enough hunters to overwhelm whatever we encounter. He would raise an army for what this bounty would earn him . . . and us.”

Gamada rubbed his chin. “I don’t know . . .”

Sadiki approached him.

“We won’t be in danger. We will stay far enough behind them that we won’t be noticed. We’ll mark our path, so we’ll know how to return. But I can’t do this without you. You’re the tracker.”

Gamada smirked. “I’ll do it, but I’ll want half your take.”

Sadiki’s eyes widened. “Half? You greedy nyani!”

“I wish you well,” Gamada said then walked away.

“Okay, half!” Sadiki agreed.

Gamada grinned as he sat down his pack.

“Let’s get some rest then.”

“Rest? We have to follow them now!”

“No, we don’t,” Gamada said. “I’m the tracker, remember?” It’s dry season. We have time. So unpack and get some rest, partner.”

Sadiki frowned as he followed Gamada’s suggestion.
