PENELOPE

This is the first time I’ve been at a sports game since my college ex broke up with me, and the first time I’ve ever been to a professional sports game, period.

To my surprise, I’m kind of into it.

When Reed scores his first goal, about five minutes into the first period, I force myself to act like his “girlfriend” should, pretending to be excited and enthusiastic.

But by the time he scores his third goal of the night, in the middle of the second period, I don’t need to pretend anymore.

Even though I know next to nothing about the game, the incredible move he pulled off to steal the puck from one of their defenders, the lightning-fast speed with which he raced down the ice, and the incredibly forceful slapshot he executed to send the puck flying past the opposing goalie, were all obviously incredible plays, and I join the rest of the arena in jumping to my feet and shouting in excitement.

When I used to go to my ex’s college games, I was never really into them. I enjoyed taking pictures of the action when I would bring my camera, but the games themselves never really grabbed me.

But something about watching Reed out there is just … different.

Even though our relationship is fake, it’s strangely easy to root for him for real.

I know it sounds stupid, but when he scores a goal, well … it kind of feels like we score a goal.

Maybe that’s how dedicated fans of sports franchises feel in general, I don’t know. But, for once, while the game is going on, I don’t wrack my brain to explain, rationalize, and over-analyze what I’m feeling—I just feel it, and live in the moment.

Which includes jumping up and down and high fiving everyone sitting near me in my section when the final buzzer blares throughout the arena and the Silver Wolves finish the game with a 6-2 win.

Darla sends me a text after the game, congratulating me on my boyfriend’s victory, as she puts it. And she’s extra sure to add plenty of wink-face emojis after the word boyfriend.

From the way Darla hasn’t really gloated about being right in her suspicion that I was more attracted to Reed than I let on, I get the impression that our act isn’t fooling her. I think she suspects that there’s more to this so-called relationship than meets the eye. Mercifully, though, she hasn’t pushed me for a confession.

The next text is from Reed, telling me that he’s going to be busy with media for a while, and asking me to wait for him at his place. He says that if I talk with the concierge in the lobby, he’ll give me a spare key to his apartment.

That makes my eyebrows rise a little bit.

I mean, really, Reed and I have just met. He trusts me to not only be alone in his apartment, but to have a spare key?

At the glittering and gilded marble-floored lobby of Reed’s building, the well-dressed
