The Magic Pond

Once there was a little mouse

Who went by the name of Fred.

He wanted to leave his mother’s house

Because he didn’t like the life he led.

“Being a mouse, I’m much too small”

He would complain to those who’d listen.

He’d whine and complain to one and all

And the tears in his eyes would glisten.

“I wish I had a magic wand,”

Cried little Fred to his mother.

“Well there is a magic pond,”

She said, “That could turn you into another.”

Little Fred’s eyes opened wide

As she told him of the tale.

He listened to what he must abide

And he knew he would not fail.

“You must let the pond choose your fate,”

She said, “And you change as it wishes.

But you must choose before it’s too late

Or you will become one of its fishes.”

That’s what she told him of the pond

But he felt no fear of the danger.

This was better than a magic wand

And he set out to become a stranger.

“Good-bye, Mother!” called little Fred,

His mother wiped her tears as she cried.

“I know this is where your heart is led,

But you can come home anytime,” she sighed.

Fred head out into the dark wood

In search of this magic place.

He felt cold beneath his coat and hood,

But still had a smile on his face.

“I know this pond will change my life,”

Little Fred thought out loud.

“Being someone new will end my strife

And lift away this awful cloud.”

Alone in the forest, through the night,

Little Fred followed the trail.

Finally, up ahead, just in sight

Was the pond that would change his tale.

Little Fred ran as fast as he could

Right to the water’s edge.

The most beautiful place was where he stood,

Right next to the tallest hedge.

Little Fred shut his eyes tight

And jumped right in with a “SPLASH!”

At the surface, he had a fright,

As there was a lightning flash.

“It worked!” he cried, “I’m no longer a mouse!

I’m free to do as I please!

I don’t have to return to my mother’s house.

I’ll have a life of such ease!”

Little Fred swam to shore

To see what he had become.

One-leg-two-leg-three-leg-four

And now crawling on his tum.

Little Fred started to walk,

But it seemed a bit too slow.

Then he realized, to his shock,

That’s as fast as he could go.

“Oh, my!” he cried, “This just won’t do.”

Little Fred started feeling low.

“I wanted to change into something new,

But a turtle is much too slow.”

Little Fred slowly turned around

And back to the pond he went,

Dragging his tummy on the ground,

This wasn’t at all what he meant.

Into the water he went under

As the lightning flashed.

This time, there was a clap of thunder

And out of the water he dashed.

He bounded out onto a log

And looked down at his feet.

“Oh, this time I am a frog!

Life can be so sweet.”

Little Fred jumped away

Happiness his new mood.

But he was hungry at the end of this day

And he wanted to find some food.

Another frog he did find

Little Fred asked him, “What’s to eat?”

“I’m hunting here, if you don’t mind,”

Said the frog, “And I see just the treat.”

Little Fred watched the frog

As he hippity-hopped on by.

His new friend sat still on a log

And then he caught a fly.
