Mira didn’t mind not going back to Kim’s house for dessert when Oakland called to see if she was available. Even though she enjoyed spending time with her family, things started to get a little awkward when the fathers of her children started to do their usual macho man competition like conversation. She was thankful for the escape, but Mira hated it was because Oakland was upset.

To everyone’s surprise, she’d finally dumped Dru. Now, no one knew for sure just how long their breakup would last, but Mira had high hopes for Oakland. They were alike in a lot of ways, but the biggest difference between them was that Mira never felt like she needed a man’s love, but Oakland felt like she needed it to survive.

As she headed to the restaurant Oakland said she wanted to meet her at, Oakland called her. Mira groaned, feeling in her gut that something was off.

“Hey, you there?”

Oakland released a shaky breath. “No. I—I think I’m gonna just stay in, Meer.”

Mira pouted, checking the time on her dashboard. “Well, do you want me to come there, or are you wanting to be alone?”

The sound of Oakland sniffling felt like daggers to Mira’s heart. She hated to know that Oakland was suffering. In all honesty, Oakland was one of the sweetest and kindest people she’d ever known—until you pissed her off—then she was just as lethal as her big brother. Smoke had definitely trained her well. And Mira could appreciate Oakland wanting to distance herself from his lifestyle because it allowed her to keep the innocence, femininity, and softness that made her unique.

“I think I need to be alone. I was going to force myself to get out the house, but I’m just not ready.”

“That’s totally okay. Feel everything you need to feel so you can release it and do whatever it takes to not feel this pain again.”

Oakland released a shaky breath. “You’re right. That’s exactly what I need to do. Thank you, sis.”

“Always. I love you.”

“I love you, too.” Just as Mira was about to disconnect the call, Oakland stopped her with, “Hey?”

“Yeah?”

“About you and Smoke…”

Mira smiled as her head shook. “You don’t have to worry. I’m going to leave him alone.”

“No, it’s… it’s not that. I actually have changed my mind. Seeing the changes in both of you has made me believe you two would be really good for each other. I know my brother, and he’s not going to make the first move. He might fuck you and cling to you a lot, but he’s not going to try and commit to you again because he broke up with you. He won’t try and double back because he doesn’t want you to reject him. So, if you want something to happen between you two, you have my blessing. And as a word of advice, you’ll need to either make the first move or invite him to initiate it in a way that he will be able to trust you will give him a second chance.
