HER APOLOGY

Angela Morris considered herself a lucky woman. As she came to the last half mile of her early morning jog, her mind was filled with the blessings of her life. She had a good husband who was currently in his second year internship at the community hospital. There was money in the bank from a frugal lifestyle and carefully planned investments. They already had their eyes on a home in a more secluded area when Bob’s internship was finished, and then they could think about children. Angela was in her last year of college but there was no real urgency for her to find a job. In fact, she probably wouldn’t need her degree, but she felt like it might help her to be a more rounded person, and a better wife to Bob.

When she finished her jog, she found someone waiting in front of the apartment. She had a moment of apprehension when a man got out of his car, and stood with his arms casually crossed. Something about his appearance was familiar.

“You haven’t changed, Angie,” he said.

The last person in her life she ever expected to see again was David Morris, but she knew his voice immediately, and she knew those incredible blue eyes. The rest of him was changed. He was taller and a lot more muscular. His skin was tanned a deep brown. And his face was definitely not the same.

After all, she was seventeen years old when David had given her his high school senior ring and asked that she wait until he returned from Afghanistan. And she was eighteen when he had returned, badly wounded and burned, and horrible to look at. By then she had already met Bob. Bob was a good man with a good future ahead of him. She had left David his ring at the hospital on the one trip she made, and she never returned. Up until now she had not seen him, but she had heard of him.

Another high school friend told her David had moved out west and lived like a hermit in a cabin in the wilderness. Now and then she felt a momentary pang of guilt, but it wasn’t her fault. It had been David’s idea to join the military.

“Aren’t you going to invite me in for coffee?” David asked.

The last thing she wanted to do was invite him into the apartment. For one thing, her sense of guilt was almost overwhelming now that he was near. For another, she was reminded of how he made her feel. Even as an innocent high school freshman, David made her feel funny inside. Of course, she was still a virgin when she married and it
