LUNA RAE

Frustration beams in his eyes and tension nestles in his body.

“He taught me a lot,” I continue.

“Hmm... He did?”

A bitter grin lines his lips.

“Good things? Or bad things?” he deadpans, tilting his eyes down briefly.

“It was...”

I stop mid-sentence.

Promptly, he swings his eyes up.

“It was good. For me,” I say in a quiet voice, panic soaring through my veins.

The corners of his mouth move up into a grin.

It’s a cold, reserved smile.

“How so?”

I suck in a strained breath.

“It, um... It gave me a different perspective on things.”

“What did you learn from him?”

Sweat starts nipping at my edges, warm blood rushing to my face.

The bathrobe feels too much.

It’s not only the heat and the sweat trickling down my neck... I’m suffocating.

I start tugging at my neckline before taking off my robe.

“Are you hot?” he asks, no trace of teasing in his voice.

“Yes. From the food mostly.”

His eyes go down, taking in my soft pajamas, the lines of my hips, and my chest.

He lifts his gaze and looks into my eyes.

“What did my father teach you, Luna?” he asks in a hushed voice.

“Things about life...” I say, no longer as hot as I was a moment ago. “Things I wish I knew,” I add, regret threading through my voice.

“Does it have to do with us?” he asks.

For a moment, I don’t know what he is talking about.

“Us?”

“My brother and I.”

“No. It doesn’t have to do with anyone in particular,” I say.

He breathes out an incredulous chuckle.

“You are a coward after all,” he says, dispassionately and also disappointed.

“I’m not,” I retort. “It has to do with me,” I say, making a clipped gesture. “But it doesn’t matter.”

“Yes, it does. It wouldn’t have changed your mind about me, and my brother had it not mattered...” he says, annoyed.

“How did it change my mind?” I shoot back. “I spent the night with him. And you are here now.”

Wrong response.

He observes me for a few more moments before leaning back in his seat.

“He changed your mind,” he says. “He wiped away everything you felt for me before.”

“I didn’t feel much,” I say, irritated.

Slowly, he shakes his head.

“You left with him the other night because you felt a lot.”

“That’s your opinion, of course,” I toss back at him before clamming up.

“What did he do to you that I couldn’t do?” he asks, a twisted grin creasing his lips.

My eyebrows shoot up in surprise.

“Are you seriously asking me that?” I ask incredulously.

“Mmm-hmm.”

I laugh coldly.

“It’s not what he did or didn’t do.”

“It’s how he made you feel...” he says before I have the chance to continue.

“Why are you asking me then if you already know the answer?”

He arches an eyebrow at me, a faint smile glinting in his eyes.

“How did he make you feel?” he asks.

I study his face for a moment.

“You wouldn’t ask me this if you didn’t know the answer, but I’ll tell you anyway. He made me realize how lonely I am.”

He seems surprised.

I continue.

“See, it doesn’t have to do with anything and anyone. It’s always about me.
