RENÉ WELLEK (1903–95)
Educated in Vienna and Prague, Wellek was working in England as a lecturer in Czech language and literature when he made his contributions to Scrutiny. He had previously worked with the Prague Linguistic Circle, and later in the 1930s he moved to America where he became a leading figure in 'Comparative Literature' and in writing the history of literary criticism. His influential Theory of Literature (with Austin Warren, 1949) effectively did for American 'New Criticism' what he had offered to do for Leavis in 1937, but he was later critical of certain developments in 'Theory' which he saw as an 'attack on literature'.
