Having fled Greece for Italy, a number of these families gathered in and around the town of Meina on Lake Maggiore, when the area was occupied by the SS. When the SS initiated an aggressive hunt for Jews, those caught up in the sweep included twenty guests of a hotel owned by a Franko couple from Salonica. The SS confined the guests to the Hôtel Meina until taking them to the nearby lake, where they were shot and thrown into the water. These murders attenuated the family line of some of the last descendants of the quintessential early-modern Ottoman Jewish protégés. © Andrea Ventura.
