Chapter 9
Ty
âDogs,â I grumbled, causing Jennie to laugh. âYou know dogs and I donât get along. Iâm never home to take care of one.
âThat is true. However, smile for the cameras, because theyâre flashing this way.â I lightly pulled her against my side, once more thinking about how great she felt against me and how right it was. Which maybe wasnât smart. Okay, so, then again, fucking my fake girlfriend wasnât smart.
But five nights ago, when Brody was sprouting his shit about my girl, I knew I had to have her. And though I did, Iâm struggling to find any remorse in me over it. If I was a smart man, it should be there.
âYeah, yeah, smiling away,â I muttered through clenched teeth, but a smile was in place.
âYou know, dogs are great. How come you havenât done this before?â Every year, the team partners up with the local pet shelters and tries to get all kinds of pets adopted. Itâs a great look for the team, and itâs a great way to decrease the animals in these places.
âI donât do cute and cuddly?â It was the only true answer I could offer her. This wasnât an event I looked forward to. Thinking back, there may be a lot of stuff I didnât look forward to when it came to team events. Playing, that was truly about it.
âWhatever,â she laughed, smacking my chest. âYou know, you donât need a dog. A cat will work for you. They take care of themselves. Just got to make sure to leave some food out for them.â We walked over to a couple of dogs that were out running around, enjoying both the freedom and the attention.
âToo much work.â I tried to keep the grumpy image as best as I could, but something about Jennieâs smile as she watched the dogs just chasing balls and then running up to people, stopped me from being that asshole. I wanted to be, regardless of all the lights flashing, but I just couldnât be.
So, when she sat down to play with a massive Golden Retriever and a Pitbull, I couldnât stop myself from sitting down next to her. And when the dogs crawled in her lap, licking her face, and causing her to laugh, I couldnât explain why I wanted to be a dog. What the hell was going on? Thoughts like this, feelings like this, wasnât something I ever did. Ask any woman I fucked, they would all tell you how closed off I was.
âYou got to get him,â Jennie said between her fits of laughter as the goldish dog kept licking her face.
âAre you going to move in with me to help take care of him?â Never, ever, have I uttered words like that to a woman. Why would I? Relationships, and commitments, werenât things I ever did, best friend or not. Or fake dating or not. Jennie smiled as she just went on petting the dog, but her eyes were glued to me.
âDo I
