SKAGWAY

Liarsville Gold Rush Trail Camp and Salmon Bake: (Sponsored by an RV Park, 907-983-3333.) A Klondike Gold Rush town has sprung to life outside of Skagway, complete with saloon, dance hall girls, tents, gold pans, and a stream. Lunch or dinner features salmon roasted over a wood fire, coleslaw, baked beans, potatoes, sourdough rolls, apple strudel, and lemonade. You’ll eat in a cookhouse on rustic tables. A dance hall show follows, along with the chance to try panning for gold.

And how did Liarsville get its name? During the Klondike Gold Rush, journalists camped out at this spot. They filed daily dispatches about the hardships of trudging over the 33-mile Chilkoot Trail and the challenges of getting passage on the Yukon River to Dawson. The hardships were hearsay. They never left the camp to investigate their stories.
