What are the policy options? While significant progress has been made globally, addressing the challenge of child labor in the future is going to require a substantial acceleration of efforts at all levels. There are still 168 million children involved in child labor worldwide (11 percent of the child population). Policy areas to address the child labor challenge include expanding social protection systems to provide poor households with a minimum income and protect against the risk of destitution and child labor as a coping strategy; making basic education and skill development programs accessible, relevant, and meaningful; and strengthening the legislation and enforcement mechanisms on minimum age and prohibited work for children (ILO 2013).
