Chapter Fifteen

The wooden platform towered over the trees, sitting on top of a jungle that led to miles and miles of coastline. Grace’s stomach sank at the sight.

“Wow. We’re really high up,” Grace said, her voice strained. Her heart pumped wildly in her chest. There was a difference between now and how she felt on that airplane ride to Costa Rica, a buzz in her veins.

Grace felt like she had somehow summoned her parents’ adventurous spirit. A spirit that had been dormant inside her for years, never allowed to come out and play. This side of her had been cloaked and hidden, tucked away until now.

This must be what they had felt like, she mused. The bungee jumping, the rock climbing, the cliff jumping. A small part of herself began to heal with the new understanding of why her parents sought adventures all the time. Her parents were chasing this… this feeling.

“Grace? Are you okay?” Noah asked, snapping Grace back to the moment.

“I’m okay,” she rasped, studying the wrinkle in his forehead.

A loud clink, metal on metal, caught both their attention as they watched the zip line guide clip a teenager to the line. The zip line guide was a beautiful woman with light brown skin and light brown eyes, staring in Noah’s direction.

“Seems like you caught someone’s attention,” Grace whispered.

“The only attention I want is yours,” Noah said. He rubbed his hands down her arms, drawing a shaky breath from her.

The guide went about the safety checks and tugged on all the buckles and snaps, then positioned him at the edge of the platform, instructing him to keep his feet up.

“Ready?” the guide said.

The teenage boy replied, nodding his head. His eyes locked on the giant cable and gripped his handlebars with a leather-on-leather squeeze.

“Pura vida!” the guide yelled, pushing the kid forward.

The boy hadn’t made a peep until he got about a hundred yards into the vast open air over the jungle and yelled, “¡Mierda!”

Grace felt herself pale.

Noah slipped his hand in hers, curling his fingers against her skin. “It’s okay to be scared,” he said.

She looked down at their hands, and her face softened. “You have this amazing ability to calm all my nerves.”

“Is that all I’m good for? Calming your nerves?”

Grace looked into his eyes and felt the color come back to her cheeks. “You might do something else to my nerves as well.”

“Like, get on them?” Noah quipped, his eyes glittering.

Grace snorted. “Not yet, at least.”

Noah leaned closer. “I’m sure I’ll get there soon enough,” he said teasingly. His fingers grazed her jawline, and Grace felt a shiver down her neck.

“You certainly are good at distracting me,” Grace said huskily. She had all but forgotten she was about to launch off this wooden platform into the jungle below.

“Who’s up?” the female guide said. They both whipped their heads to her.

“Do you want to go first? To get it out of the way?” Noah said.

She shook her head violently. “No. No way,” she said, peering over the platform.
