Alex took her hand as they walked out of the bar. The night was cool and stars were pricking through the sky. Almost wintertime, Kat thought.
âI should call an Uber.â
âWait,â said Alex. âThere's something I need to do first.â
She stepped in and they were almost nose to nose and even in the darkness, Kat could see Alex's deep blue eyes glinting. Her body longed for what was going to happen, but her mind was somewhere else.
They'd connected, really connected, she'd be the first to admit that she'd had a wonderful evening. Alex was funny, charming, and her travel stories were fascinating. But here was someone who bungee jumped, who went white-water rafting, who had scaled pyramids and slept on beaches and got lost in the jungles of Malaysia. How could someone like that possibly find her interesting?
âI've had a wonderful time,â she said, delaying the moment. âYou've lived a very interesting life.â
âYeah,â Alex said. She sighed. âSometimes I feel like this, right now, isn't really my life at all.â
âI can see why.â Giving up a lifestyle to take care of a child was a big decision. One that Kat respected Alex for.
âI wish I was like you.â
Kat frowned. âWhat?â
âI wish I was like you, sometimes,â Alex said. âI wish I knew what I wanted, I wish I had a calling, I wish there was something that I was as good at as you are at teaching.â
It was Kat's turn to move now. She carefully scooped a lock of hair behind Alex's ear, her fingertip barely touching her skin, a tremor running up her arm.
Alex reached up to cup her cheek, and then their lips were meeting again and Kat could feel herself disappearing into the sensation of being kissed.
It had been so long since she'd been with anyone but her wife. She'd been worried that she wouldn't remember how to do anything, that everything would be unfamiliar again. The first kiss could have been instinct, but this second one showed her that there was nothing she'd forgotten.
Alex's hands went lower, skirting her waist, pulling her in and Kat's body responded, a heat growing between her legs that was impossible to ignore. She put her hands into Alex's hair, pulling her even closer, tasting her, smelling her, filling all her senses with the woman.
She felt a pressure and then Alex's leg was sliding between hers and she let it happen. For one glorious moment, she allowed her legs to be parted. And then she came to her senses.
âWe're making out in a parking lot like desperate teenagers,â she whispered, pulling away from Alex's lips.
âI feel like a desperate teenager,â Alex said with a groan, but she backed off, stepped away. âCome home with me.â
How she wanted to. But no. She was afraid, she could admit that. Afraid of herself and what she might do and what all this might mean. But she also wasn't ready, not yet. No matter how much her body wanted Alex she just wasn't ready to jump into bed with another woman.
