Chapter 4

Faith

“Kelly!” I say, way too brightly and to my horror I feel a giddy laugh bubbling up.

“Well look at you,” Kelly replies. She arches an eyebrow at me and smiles back. “A few days away really did you good, huh. Girl, you are practically glowing. I’m so glad.”

She pulls me into a warm hug that I return.

“It really did. I think just getting out of my own head really helped me put everything into perspective.” I shrug. “I mean, I still need to find a new job and a place to live, but …” I smile at her, feeling tears pricking my eyes. “I definitely know who my friends are now.”

“I know all about that.” Another woman walks into the living room, I think I recognize her from a bar I went to a couple of times. I think her name’s Chloe.

“I think we’re all pretty lucky to have Kelly as a friend,” I say and then smile at the third woman who follows Chloe into the room. “Georgia, right?” The woman nods.

“Not that I’m not happy to see you all,” I say after a moment. “But what are you doing here?”

“We’re taking you out, girl,” Kelly says and the other two intone, “Girl’s night!”

Kelly counts off on her fingers as she says, “There’s going to be drinking and dancing and absolutely no boys.”

Just then the door to the cellar closes and we all look to see Daryl standing awkwardly against it.

“Hey there,” he says and grins way too brightly. “Didn’t expect visitors.”

“We can see that,” Chloe says and her gaze drops over his wide bare chest and loose fitting jeans.

A shock of jealousy slices through my chest. That’s my man she’s eyeing!

Wait. Is he mine? I think we’ve kind of been flirting the last few days and before Kelly and her friends showed up, something was definitely about to happen. But does that mean anything?

I wish I knew him better. On one hand a holiday fling with a sweet very sexy man makes me feel all warm and excited, but after having my life turned over so recently, could I handle losing him when the holiday ended?

“You,” Kelly says, pointing at me. “Go shower and sing your sexy getting ready song. Give us a yell when you’re out so I can do your makeup and Georgia can do your hair. Tonight this is an all inclusive girls night with all the bells and whistles.”

Chloe settles her hands on her hips and asks, “What about me? I can either make drinks or fix your spark plugs.” She finishes that with a saucy wink.

“Why don’t you make drinks,” Kelly says and they all laugh before shoving me towards the stairs. “Go.”

Daryl

The moment my girl is out of sight, the three women round on me. None of them look happy.

“You just couldn’t help yourself, could you?” Kelly hisses, keeping her voice low. “Do you have any idea what that girl’s been through?”

“Yes, actually,” I reply and straighten my shoulders to stand taller, looking them all in the eye.
