CHAPTER 16

Noon

ANITA

The break room, where Anita normally ate her lunch, stank. Someone had tried to heat a foil-wrapped burrito in the microwave. The air was rancid from fried electrical wiring and burnt jalapeños. Anita grabbed her container from the refrigerator, which had its own set of unpleasant food odors from long-forgotten meals no one had thrown out. She walked across the Small Parts compound to Shipping.

This department was all old white guys who brought sandwiches for lunch. Their microwave looked like it had never been used. Most of the men ate outside under the awning where they were allowed to smoke. It was cool and quiet in the break room. Anita settled in at the picnic table with the latest Harlan Coben novel, which she hoped would distract her from the meagerness of her yogurt and apple lunch.

She had been starving herself all week. She wanted to look her absolute best for Ted’s party. Not for Ted—he would have even loved the mousy Anita—but for all those guys and girls who had ignored her in high school. Anita loved her new look—the boobs, the platinum hair, the slender waistline, the snug-fitting jeans and tops. She knew she was hot. After this party, so would everyone else.

“Is that a good book?”

Anita looked up, startled. Her father-in-law, lunch pail in hand, hovered over her table.

“Zeke!” she said. She jumped up from the table and hugged him. “Don’t sneak up on me when I’m reading a thriller. I almost had a heart attack.”

She hadn’t seen Zeke since she had the boob job. He was a devoted grandfather and took the kids on outings regularly, but Anita always arranged it so that he picked them up from Johnnie’s place. Anita wanted to tell herself that she did that because it was more convenient for Zeke, but the truth was she was afraid of what Zeke would think of her transformation.

It had only been a few months, but he looked different. He always had such a military bearing. Perfect posture, work pants clean and pressed. Nothing out of place. But today he looked pale, tired. His gray hair, usually trimmed like he had just come from the barber, was longer, tickling his ears and running over his shirt collar.

“Mind if I join you?” he asked.

“Of course not. I’m the one trespassing.”

“I like your hair,” he said. He tried to maintain eye contact, but he had definitely noticed her chest. “What are you doing over here in the geezer lunchroom?” He set his lunch pail down and slid onto the bench across from her.

“You guys don’t stink the place up with tacos and tamales,” she said. She dog-eared the page she was reading and set the book down. “And it’s quiet so I can read.”

Zeke picked up the book and read the blurb on the cover. “‘Tell No One is suspense at its finest.’ What’s it about?”

“A man whose wife disappears without a trace. He thinks she’s dead and then eight years later he gets a mysterious email that makes him think she’s still alive.
