As it turned out, Heidi did not have a plan. Not in the slightest.
Whether it was because she was late or for some other reason, Malcolm never showed up at the park. He didnât text her either, not that Heidi wouldâve noticed or cared. She was focused on getting to Kateâs game, for which she was also lateâand wet. Somehow, sheâd known she needed her umbrella, and yet sheâd still left it in the car.
Heidi stood at the edge of the tent, shivering and avoiding the other parents. For some reason, she especially didnât want to talk to Hot Tom, the man now surrounded by a gaggle of flirty parents of various genders. She barely registered Kateâs home run before taking off to pick up Max.
Inside the school, Heidi continued her plan to distance herself from other humans. She paced while she waited for the rehearsal to end. Giving in, she texted Evan instead, begging him to pick up Jilly. She was lucky he said yes with only a few choice words in response. Jilly would still be late, but not as late as if sheâd had to wait for Heidi.
She didnât give Max a choice and dragged him away from his friend Kayla. Her relationship with her would-be fiancé wasnât the only thing sheâd forgotten that day. Max reminded her about buying a couple of costume pieces and then spent the drive to Park Ave whining about how he was going to be in trouble and how heâd rather have gone shopping with Kayla and her mom. By the time they pulled into the parking lot, Heidi wished sheâd sent him with them.
She slid into her seat with a scowling Max at her side. Several rows up, she spotted Evan. He turned around, and Heidi tried to shrink into herself. Too late. Evan spotted her and a frown creased his brow briefly before he saw Max and his features relaxed. Heidi sighed, and the woman in front of her turned around to glare.
Only two more students played. Heidi was horrified to realize sheâd missed Jilly. There was a small chance Jilly had been too focused on performing to notice, and Heidi clung to that hope as people began moving into the reception room.
No such luck. Jilly spotted her and in a flash was at her side. âMom! You missed it.â
âIââ Heidiâs tongue stuck.
Jilly rolled her eyes. âYou couldâve just said you werenât coming. Dad said youâd be here when he picked me up.â
âI really did mean to be, but Maxâs rehearsal went over.â
Turning to Max, Jilly said, âWhy are you here?â
âMom made me.â Max shrugged. âIâm gonna get a cookie.â
âMe too.â
Cookies. Another thing Heidi had forgotten. Every family was supposed to supply some for the reception. Maybe Evan and Jen had brought something. Knowing Jen, probably pretentious, homemade cookies, not the store-bought ones Heidi wouldâve supplied if sheâd remembered.
Well, nothing for it except to eat a cookie, say something nice to Jillyâs teacher, and drag the kids home. For
