KNAK HATED HOT dogs. All those parts of the pig, ground up and sealed in a tube. It was all they served at militia trainings. As much as he loved the training, he was done with hot dogs. They reminded him of family cookouts, his mother chain-smoking Winstons and beer-filled ashtrays filled with cigarette butts, brown and wet like a log flotilla on the Yukon ready to be ridden into town.

He lay prone underneath a water tower on the hill across from the Ray’s Hot Dogs stand, scanning the scene through the Vortex Optics scope mounted on his Remington 700 rifle.

After shooting the bum earlier in the night, Knak considered possibilities. He considered simply walking up to Archer in one of the places the ambulance crews gathered between calls. There was the Bean Machine, over on Highland, or the Exxon in Kelley Square. He discounted both as too congested, escape routes limited by highways and vacant lots and trendy bars sure to be packed with beautiful people.

But Knak didn’t want to simply put a pistol in Archer’s face and pull the trigger. That was Ron Edson’s preferred method. Edson ran the local feedstore that Avis Locke used to supply the hens on his egg farm and was the MMM’s sergeant at arms. He’d pushed Knak to use the mission to avenge his dead wife as the group’s first official strike against the system. At the last meeting in Locke’s warehouse, after approval of the minutes and before new business, Edson’s opinion had been voted into doctrine. Knak’s mission of revenge had become the group’s, and the group’s mission had become Knak’s.
