The Power of Stories

Each type of story tells us something about people and the nature of the universe we inhabit. Our stories strike at the very nature of reality. Though the plots and characters may reflect the personalities, concerns, and culture of the storyteller, the form of each type of story goes much deeper than its individual authors.

The love story appeals to a primordial urge of people to reproduce. It involves the nature of sexuality and the desire of humans to have intimate relationship and companionship with members of the opposite sex. The love story represents a ritual or liturgical recital of the continuity of the human race that goes far beyond the talents of individual storytellers. William Shakespeare and Barbara Cartland use the same story type with different levels of skill and with different literary forms. For the stories to work, however, the audience must bring to the story the deeply held belief in romantic love.

The adventure story reminds us of the struggle to survive in a sometimes harsh and competitive environment filled with hostile adversaries. It urges us to master the skills needed to survive—courage, persistence, ingenuity—and conquer what would conquer us. The adventure story reminds us that strength and power alone are not sufficient to ensure success.

The love story and the adventure story reflect the challenges of survival in an evolutionary model of nature. Of course, these kinds of stories have been around for much longer than Darwin’s theory of natural selection, which is why they are so revealing. The very act of storytelling emerges from deep within us and tells us something about the universe if we take the time to listen. So it is with the mystery story.
