Arriving by Train

Arrivals from eastern European countries and points in northern Greece terminate in Athens’s Larissa Station, a standard-gauge facility. With the closure of the Peloponnese Station, if you are traveling via Attika’s Superfast Ferries or Hellenic Mediterranean Lines ferries to the port of Patras, you will also arrive at Larissa station. The station has a train information booth with a limited amount of city information available. The station has taxi stands and bus service, but we recommend the taxi. The taxi fare from the station area to the tourist office on Syntagma (Constitution) Square is inexpensive, about €4 plus baggage charges, and well worth it.

Larissa Station serves the standard-gauge rail lines to the north.

• Money exchange: At the north end of the train platform. The sign reads BANK. Hours: 0800–2115 Monday–Friday, 0900–1400 Saturday, 0900-1300 Sunday.

• Train information: In a booth to your immediate left when entering the station from the train platform area. Hours: 0800–2200 daily. Tel: (0210) 823 7741.

• Baggage storage: In room marked LEFT BAGGAGE OFFICE located to the left as you enter the station from the track side (open 0700 to 2000).

• Train reservations: Are best obtained at the Greek Railways office at No. 1–3 Karolou Street or No. 6 Sina Street. Get taxi instructions from the tourist office on 2 Amerikis Street.

• Rail pass validation: Also available at the Greek Railways main office. Rail passes can also be validated at ticket windows in the stations, but only on your departure day.
