I AWOKE IN MY CELL with a groan, my uniform stiff around my shoulders and waist.

I looked around the cell and found no other clothing.

I sighed. Were the Council really going to leave me here in my day-old uniform?

I hoped that they brought clean clothes when they brought food.

Assuming they brought food...

And wasn’t Maureen still in her Guardian jacket? The rest of her clothes also looked like they matched, so was she still in what they’d brought her in?

Of course, if she had her magic, she could be using that to keep herself clean, but I didn’t have that luxury.

I went to activate the spell on the wall again, to ask her about it, but before I could, the door to my cell slammed open and two Slayers barged their way through.

“Hey!” I cried as they grabbed me roughly by the arms, their fingers digging in enough to bruise. “What do you think you’re doing?”

“The Council wants to see you,” one of them said, before shifting with me.

They threw me down on the marble floor of the Council chambers as we arrived, the floor sizzling with magic as chains shot up to bind with my shackles, keeping me in place.

“What the hell?” I demanded as I looked up to see that there was only one Council member there.

The woman with the electric blue eyes, just like Maureen’s.

A Guide, then.

She turned to me with a sickeningly sweet smile. “It seemed prudent while you were here to learn all that we could about your magic. After all, you were unusually powerful before you connected with Nature or Maria Brown. Perhaps that’s why they showed an interest in you. Either way, we should learn all that we can while you’re here.”

“I don’t know anything.”

“No, I don’t expect that you do. But we couldn’t keep using our examination technique yesterday without risking harm to you. However, it looks like you’ve healed, so we shall continue today, and see what else we can learn.”

Before I could protest, the metal bars from yesterday shot out from the ground, the magic buzzing through it with such ferocity that I collapsed in pain, all awareness leaving me almost instantaneously.
