Chapter Four
Living with the Grants was quite different than living with the Parkers for Mary. The hunk of a son that lived with Mrs. Grant made her continuously think about her lack of choice in becoming a nun.
After Mary moved in with the Grants to help her tutor, she felt for the first time real freedom, much more than what she felt during camps. Also, Michael was the perfect gentleman. He did all the stressful jobs around the small house and left little or nothing for Mary to do. He was also a trader in iron, so he was frequently away during the day and came back most times late at night.
However, a strong relationship was developing between the two of them. There was a night Mary defiled all the regulations of becoming a nun for Michael. Mary had been reading a book when Michael arrived, and Mrs. Grant was already asleep.
“Hey, you are home early today.” She said without looking at him. He was very handsome that night, sweaty, which churned Mary's stomach, making her feel uneasy. He was so appealing.
“I was able to sell the last merchandise earlier than normal today.” He sounded exhausted.
“Good. There are some bread and milk on the table.” She said, still not looking at him.
He went inside for a quick bath and came out minutes later. He went to the table to eat the remainder of the bread and milk. Mary was still outside reading her book under the dimly lit lamp and the bright moonlight. After he finished eating, he went outside and sat down beside her.
“How is my mum doing?” he asked her quietly.
“She is still the same. However, her stomach seems to be going back to its normal size, but she is still fragile.” She said silently, hiding how bad she felt for Mrs. Grant.
“That’s an improvement.” He said, cheering her up.
“The physician came to recheck her today. Gave her some medicine, which made her sleep soundly, but he said he still hasn’t been able to find the cure for her illness.” She said, gradually looking at his face. It was fresh from the bath he had taken. His beards still had beads of water, which fascinated her. She found herself wanting to reach out and wipe those beads away, feel the coarse hair under her hands.
“She is resilient; I know she would come out of this alive.” He said, somewhat bitterly.
Mary took hold of his hand and squeezed it.
“She will be fine.” She said with certainty.
Michael looked into her eyes and suddenly leaned in to give her a gentle kiss. A soft tugging upon her lips, before he pulled back, realizing he overstepped. Mary reached up and pulled him closer, planting a kiss on his lips. Things quickly heated up, and that night they lay together.
The next day, Mary woke up with massive arms wrapped around her. She bitterly realized that she couldn’t take the vows of a nun anymore, but the feeling of Michael in her was worth it.
