Staff Motivations

In Cambodia, it is quite common for people to view all the potential avenues for extracting value from their job position as fair game. In contrast, workers in the Western world generally understand that salary (and associated fringe benefits like transportation and healthcare.) is the only compensation someone should receive for their work. On paper the same is true in Cambodia. However, benefits such as the power to schedule an appointment, select a vendor or shortlist candidates can be considered bankable benefits by some.

The way these benefits are converted into personal value can be straightforward like cash, or indirect through the accumulation of personal favors. As a manager, you must always be diligent and try to understand the true power relationships that are setup by each job position. While it can be impossible to avoid all forms of employee abuse of power, you can limit them through transparent and prescriptive processes.

In many cases, you will find staff are more loyal to each other than the company. You will read weekly examples where staff go on mass strike to protest a perception of unfair employer practice. There is a solidarity that forms among employees, and one of your tasks as a manager will be to shift this balance more in favor of the company. There are some strategies for this in the following section.
