The Underground

Seras Major

“In the Collatio.”

Gerari frowns. “You scared me.”

“Sorry,” Sasha says sheepishly, unsurprised by the look on his face. Dropping down on someone in the dark is bound to startle them. “I need to tell you about what I just learned.”

Gerari looks at the door. “I was just heading down to do my rounds and check the cells.”

“Can I join you?” she asks though it isn’t a question.

Gerari studies her. “It’s not a pleasant place.”

“I’ve been in the Underground before. I’m fine. It’s fine.”

“Fine,” he says, swinging the door open.

Sasha snatches the lantern near Gerari’s feet and heads for the stairs through the doorway. Even with the light, the bottom of the long, cement staircase isn’t visible. It’s like the world drops off.

One step at a time. Sasha slides her toe forward, lowering herself onto the first stair.

“What’s in the Collatio?” Gerari asks from behind once the door slams shut.

“Secrets.”

“Secrets? What kind of secrets?”

Sasha settles into a slow rhythm down the steps. “Hopefully, the kind that can help us figure out what is happening in the Major.” The scuff of her boots seems loud in the small, confined space.

“Care to elaborate?” Gerari prompts when she doesn’t continue.

“Rory came up with it actually. It’s a good idea.” As Sasha becomes accustomed to the dark, she lifts the lantern higher and quickens her pace down the stairs. “Rory and I were talking as I looked through the library book. I found a lot of information about Egyptians, but I couldn’t see what it had to do with the murders or anything else going on here. Besides some common symbols, I couldn’t find a connection.”

“And Rory saw something different?”

Sasha doesn’t look back at Gerari but imagines the confusion on his face. “Yes. Rory pointed something out that I hadn’t considered. If the banned teachings are true, if humans and angels did live together in the same dimension, those humans may have passed on the concepts of the deities to later generations who existed after the dimensions were separated.” Sasha stops on the stairs and turns to look at Gerari. Did I confuse him?

By the look on Gerari’s face, the answer is obviously ‘yes.’

“We may not need to know about the human civilizations that came after the dimensions were separated,” she continues. “We may need to know about the humans who lived with the angels. Or we may need to know more about that time. Even though the notes reference the deities of later humans, those concepts probably existed at an earlier time too. We had only assumed the concepts originated with the Egyptians.”

Slowly Gerari’s face changes as the information seems to connect. “But what information? What does any of this have to do with the murders? Or the animals? How do we know it has to do with any of that?”

“Well, I don’t think the Visionary wrote the note. The other two notes were on the same type of paper and written in the same style. But the Visionary is dead. So the first note is tied to her because we found it at her home.
