Chapter 15
Out on the desert, Lisa held tightly to the overhead bar as John’s Jeep hit a deep rut off the road and bounced. Her stomach lurched.
Dave sat next to her with a wild, excited look in his eyes.
“Now, what the hell’s going on?” John growled as he brought the Jeep to an abrupt halt.
Lisa leaned forward, peering over Richard’s shoulder to look out the windshield.
A convoy of army vehicles, coming over a low hill, headed straight towards them.
“It looks like the same vehicles that went past the house earlier,” Lisa exclaimed. She swallowed hard. This can’t be good.
“Yeah, it does,” John responded, “except now, they seem to be in more of a hurry with less vehicles.” John pulled the Jeep off the road to get out of the way.
As the convoy passed, a Hummer pulled out of line and made a beeline for them. It stopped next to the Jeep.
As it turned out, the same captain who had talked to them less than two hours earlier, leaned out his rolled-down window with a look of shock and disorientation. Dirt and blood spotted his uniform, now torn from multiple minor wounds. His hat was gone, and blood stained the side of his head. “Sir, I would advise you to return to your home, get your family, and follow us out of here while you can.”
John nodded in the direction from where the army was retreating. “Why? What happened up there?”
“We were misinformed about the strength of the enemy,” he said bluntly. “We got our asses kicked.”
“Is the enemy following you?” Richard asked from the passenger’s seat.
“Yes, but we’re fighting as we pull back. We’re trying to hold them off long enough to get our wounded out.”
Suddenly, a loud explosion went off just a hundred yards away.
Lisa jumped with the others in the Jeep. She looked at a cloud of dust. “What the hell was that?”
“Artillery fire, Miss, from a 105-mm howitzer,” said the captain, looking at her with concern on his face. “They have a range of just over two miles. That should tell you how close the enemy is.”
John barked, “I understand, soldier, carry on.”
The captain threw John a salute. “Take care, sir.”
John nodded as the Hummer drove off. “Well, that changes things. Now, we have to leave and follow these guys out of here while we have the chance. Holing up in the shelter isn’t a good option. We can only hope they won’t find us there. It’s a bigger risk.”
Richard said calmly, “I agree.”
Dave piped up with, “If we do stay at the house, we can make it look deserted. They’ll probably take a quick look and just leave.”
Richard eyed him and said, “We don’t know how much time we’ll have to make it look deserted. I think our best bet is to leave as soon as possible and follow these guys out.”
John turned the Jeep around and slid into the convoy, which headed back towards the house. “Hold on,” he said, suddenly turning off the main road, “I’m going to take a short cut.
