n Monday, Harley grabbed Honoria’s arm as she pulled her L.L. Bean backpack from her locker.

“Don’t take the bus today.” Harley grinned. Thick black kohl lined her eyes and scarlet lipstick gave her a vampire look. Now she could feature in the Halloween in the Country issue.

“I have to, it’s two-thirty. School ended.” Around them classmates shouted and threw papers as they headed toward the outdoors to what remained of their autumn afternoon.

Harley narrowed her eyes. “Duh. Aren’t you going with Leon to the historical society?”

Honoria nodded, slamming her locker. Did Harley think she was trying to steal Leon? He could have Harley if he wanted her; Honoria didn’t need a boyfriend.

Unless he was like Leon. No boy at her old school had ever taken an interest in something other than music, movie stars, and video games.

She slung her backpack over her shoulder and the strap caught in the fabric of her crimson Lip Service shirt, drawing the collar tight against her neck. She tugged it down.

Harley sighed. “Then come with me.” She linked her arm through Honoria’s and headed toward the front door, reserved for seniors who drove and the two students who lived within walking distance.

“If I miss the bus, no one can pick me up for a while.” Was she stupid for following Harley? She didn’t seem to burst with fabulous ideas. Going to Witchwood Hollow had been a mistake… hadn’t it? The nightmares had ceased.

“You’re getting home.” Harley led her through the parking lot to the road, walking along the ditch toward the gas station.

Excitement sizzled through Honoria as if she were skipping school. She’d skipped once back in the city, but her mom had spent the day with her in Central Park.

“A girl has to skip at least one day of high school,” her mother had said. “Now, you won’t need to get it over with.”

Maybe it didn’t count, since her mother had called the office saying Honoria was sick, but she could smile whenever she remembered how much fun they’d had in the park eating falafel wraps and people watching.

Leon leaned against a truck in the gas station parking lot with his arms folded. Part of the driver’s door had rusted away. “Missed you guys.” With the sun making highlights glow in his shaggy hair, he could have fallen off a poster pasted to the side of a city bus.

Harley pressed her breasts against his chest and nipped his chin. How child-friendly. “Someone took forever. She didn’t trust me.” Harley pouted, one hand on her hip, and he kissed her lips.

“I didn’t realize we were meeting you.” Honoria averted her gaze from the public display of affection. She shouldn’t feel jealous. They were lucky to have each other.

After a final squeeze, Leon released Harley to open the driver’s door. “I can’t park at the school since I don’t have a driver’s license. The secretary monitors the vehicles and stuff.”

They monitored them for a reason. Honoria gulped as he climbed into the driver’s seat. “You’re driving? But you only have a permit.
