After Franz had left the farm for Germany, Gerald ‘worked’ on the farm, but lacked in the motivation department. He continually moaned to Angela that farming was not for him. He often pledged his love to her and in their better weeks, he was indeed loving and considerate but would gradually degenerate into surly and aggressive moods. Particularly when he had difficulty explaining to his sceptical wife that electronics was the future.

“Why can’t you just accept what I say is true? Why are you always challenging my will? I’m not so sure that you are as intelligent as you’re supposed to be. Can’t you see where the future is, ‘Village Girl?’ I want to be a ‘somebody.’ Someone that people will look up to and say, ‘That’s Gerald Clarke, a man with a vision!’ They won’t do that if I am an ordinary bloody farm labourer.” Then the convincing argument landed. “A good wife should support her husband.”

Whenever they went for a stroll or even out to the fields to get the cows, Angela often tried to give him a little cuddle, but he always broke off the contact by finding something to pick up, look at or run after or some other distraction. However, Angela’s beauty made sure he was a willing partner in bed and she made sure she was always available. Lovemaking? Or was it only sex?

After they had finished, he would turn away. If she followed him, he rolled over and lay on his stomach. He once told her that she was ‘too clinging.’ Surely, wanting a cuddle wasn’t ‘clinging’, was it? Wasn’t this the normal wish of a partner in love?

Angela was prepared to put up with most things for love but that did not include sharing him. She did her best to ignore Gerald’s propensity to ogle at other women for fear of him branding her as a ‘nag’ but there came times when it was impossible to ignore it any longer. She tried non-combative methods first.

“Do you like Me in this blouse, Gerald? Does it show off my bust nicely? You look very handsome tonight. I always feel so good when I am out with you.”

Eventually, as if the strands of a spider’s web had stuck to his face and were tickling his nose, Gerald would become irritated and look away, usually in the direction of another woman. Angela, unable to ignore his behaviour any more, would then resort to criticism of his targets, especially once at the village hall.

“She looks a bit rough. No style.” This seemed to make him even more interested. “Enough! Why do you look at everyone else and not me, Gerald?”

“It helps me realise that you are the best.”

“Why do you need help?”

“Don’t start, Angela.”

Firstly through clenched teeth but eventually after dragging her outside and at full volume, “All my friends can do what they want. Their girlfriends never challenge them and anyway, it’s normal for a man to be a man sometimes.”

“What does being a man mean? Who tells you what a man should do, Gerald?”

“No one tells you.
