A Treasure to Keep

“Shot!” everyone yelled as I grabbed the glass and tossed back the vodka. It burned going down, but I refused to grab the glass of water to my right. If I did, I would lose.

“Oh my god, Chester.” Brad slapped me on the back as the guys around me cheered. “It’s Ned’s turn. If he grabs his chaser, you win.”

The pot was a hundred bucks, and I needed that money. I had bills to pay, and the hundred dollars would go a long way. I wasn’t feeling so good, though. Another part of the rules was that I couldn’t throw up before the last shot.

A burp worked its way up my throat, but I sucked in a few gulps of air to try and steady my stomach. Both Ned and I had drunk two chasers each. This was the last drink. If Ned didn’t drink the water, we’d have to go another round until the tie was broken, and I didn’t think my body would tolerate any more vodka. I was already leaning heavily against the bar, using it to keep myself upright.

Getting sick was an automatic lose. My stomach churned like the sea during a storm. It pitched back and forth, up and down. Or was that just me? Was I swaying will clinging to the bar? Or was that the room? I really wanted to get out of there. I wasn’t a drinker.

Brad had talked me into coming here. Then we had run into our coworkers. Ned Thornton had always talked shit at work. He was one of those guys who always loved to brag about everything. One of those guys who always had to one-up a person.

I was determined to win this just so I could shut his smarmy face up. His little peanut gallery—Ha! That was a good one—had tossed in the money for the bet to sweeten the victory. Larry, Frank, and Joe were cheering Ned on. I really wished they would shut up. The bar was already loud enough, making my head thrum with a pounding headache.

Larry whispered something to Joe and Frank then pointed at me as the three of them laughed. I thought about tossing my glass of water in Larry’s face. I really didn’t like him. I’d been working at the local hospital for the past year, as one of the housekeeping staff, and Larry, every so often, would make a rude comment about my weight.

I think he was jealous that he didn’t look this damn good. I might’ve been carrying some extra poundage, but Larry had a hook nose and his eyes were too damn big for his face.

But I wasn’t one to belittle another, so I’d never thrown insults at him in return.

Ned looked at me with bleary-eyed determination. He swayed as he rubbed his forehead. The guy was skinny, so the alcohol was affecting him faster.

Or I hoped that was the case. His cheeks were red, and sweat trickled down his scalp. Everyone looked on with eager eyes, waiting for Ned to pick up the shot glass.
