Chapter Three

The ship looked majestic, even as it lied defeated on the ocean floor. Nobody else was around and Laela couldn’t believe her luck. She had never been the first one at a shipwreck before. Everything in that ship was hers for the taking, and she hoped her bag could fit all the things she would find.

A large gash had been ripped into the hull on the port side, seemingly from a rock. While the hole would be plenty big enough for both of them, she was curious if there was an alternate route. She closed her eyes to see Lilith’s perspective.

The top deck was composed of polished wood, with guardrails around the edge. A glass wall separated the open deck from a room that was now filled with water, empty trays that probably once held food, and dozens of dead bodies. The women were dressed in brightly colored silk dresses and the men dressed in tuxedos. Swarms of fish were helping themselves to the fresh meat, leaving blood and bits of gore to float in the room. What was probably once a celebration now looked like something out of a nightmare. Swimming through a ship full of dead people didn’t bother her, but just thinking about a room full of blood and guts made her gag. Laela willed Lilith to swim back to her and opened her eyes.

It was pitch black inside the hole where they entered, and Lilith glowed like she did in the tunnel. The magical light glinted off the metal machinery, though little else was in the room.

They continued through a door that took them into a narrow hallway. Rows of doors on either side lined it, and a single corpse floated in the middle. It was the first fresh corpse outside of an anatomy book Laela had ever seen. Most of the ones she saw had been riddled with fish bites or reduced to skeletons. This one had no marks on him aside from cyanosis. She searched his pockets and found a folded pouch made from what looked like an animal skin. It unfolded to reveal folds of greenish paper that had the profile of some man printed on one side and what appeared to be a palace on the other side. Pictures of the dead man with a woman and a child were also in the pouch. Laela frowned while she stashed the pouch away in her purse. This man would never see that woman or the child ever again.

The other rooms in the hallway likewise contained fresh corpses. In each of their pockets were more of these pouches that the first man had. Some had more of the green papers, some had different pictures, and one was empty except for cards of varying color. Laela took them all. One of the bodies had a golden watch, but it had stopped ticking. Most of the bodies also had a rectangular device in their pocket. The devices were slightly different sizes, but they were all small enough to fit in the palm of her hand.
