When someone is arrested and convicted of being a serial killer, the very first question on everyone’s lips is why. For most people, it is completely incomprehensible how these killers can commit such horrific crimes. It’s not just that they commit murder that disturbs people, it is the other things they do to the bodies, such as necrophilia, cannibalism and mutilation. Then the bodies are tossed away like trash, with no human thought or empathy.

Trying to understand how a killer’s mind works has led many to dedicate their lives to analyzing and studying the psychopathy of killers. Some of their profiles contain opinion and conjecture however, so it is not uncommon to find disagreements between experts. Abuse in the home, disabilities, mental illness, or just plain evilness and sadism, are some of the background conditions many profilers will take into account.
