Chapter 16

“What happened to you?”

Derek awoke and tried to find something to focus on in the dark room.

“Who’s there?” he asked.

“It doesn’t matter.” The voice was thin, raspy and unrecognizable. “But we are both here. What happened to you?”

“I was the Captain of the Orca. We came through the Entropy Gate and crashed here.”

The voice became a whisper. “But you fell. You fell away from the rest.”

Derek felt a chill go through his body.

Derek had jumped from the hull of the Orca despite Silla’s warning to wait. He had known that there was a chance of getting caught in the slipstream of the Orca’s command section and his worst fears had been realized when his thrusters had gone out from the sudden onrush of wind. He worked to ignite them and struggled helplessly as he saw Mitchum, Silla, and Michael in their environmental suits gliding to safety far ahead of him.

His thrusters had finally caught on and fired, but he was falling very fast and the ground, though soft and muddy, rushed at him with a painful impact. He regained consciousness in a great deal of pain and saw that his leg was bent upwards though he was on his side.

“Lost in the memories?”

“Yes. I was remembering the ones who were there when I fell.” Derek recalled the guardians. “They just stood there for the longest time and didn’t help me. I was hurt.”

“When was that, Mr. Shelby?”

“A while ago. Three months, I think.”

The voice did not respond.

Derek thought about the wire and cloth bandages that cut into his hands. “They didn’t do much to help fix me up. They put me in a small room. It had no windows and only one door. It was so cramped.”

“They know what we fear. They feed on it.”

“You know what they are?” Derek asked.

“Yes.”

“What?”

There was no response.

“You won’t tell me?”

“No. I can’t.”

“How long have you been here?” Derek asked.

“When did they let you leave?”

“I don’t know how long I was kept. I can’t remember what they did to me. I had so many nightmares and I couldn’t tell what was real and what was in my head. It might have only been a few days.”

“Do you remember the day you left them?”

Derek smiled. “They let me go. I don’t know why?”

“I think you do.”

Derek nodded, but he didn’t want to admit it aloud.

“Why are you back here?”

Derek stood and paced in the dimly lit room. He could not see who he spoke to and something deep inside of him told him he didn’t want to.

“There was another ship,” Derek said. “It landed here and I went to them. I met a man named Sador. He asked about the guardians. He knew who they were. I was only there a short time when the guardians arrived and spoke to Sador.”

“What did Sador say to the guardians?”

“They spoke softly.”

“You are here because of a word. Aren’t you.”

Derek nodded. “A word.”

“When they asked you the question, you said ‘yes’.”

“I made a soul-deal with them.” Derek’s voice was a mere whisper.
