Chapter Ten

Nicky went along to the open show because she had nothing else planned for Saturday, and she had to stop following Beth around like some kind of pervert. After she'd seen her in the restaurant, she had become sort of obsessed with what Beth was doing, who she was seeing. It wasn't as if she would go back to her even if Beth asked her to. Yet she had sat in her car one night after dark watching Patricia Robson and Mark Forrester and other people meet in Beth's living room. She hadn't told Meg about any of this, especially after Meg's anger about her being stopped by the police after trying to get into the condo.

Meg wanted nothing to do with Denise, her ex, she knew, but Denise had been and still was a crazy woman. Nicky recalled how Denise had parked at the end of the road, spying on Meg.

How was that different than what she had been doing?

It was a warm, dusty fall-like day. Tina was working her one Saturday a month at the clinic for the uninsured. Lucy was with her dad. Dry leaves scuttled across the ground in front of a slight breeze. The grass was brittle underfoot. She wandered the fairgrounds while Meg and Allie got their animals ready to show.

Allie was so nervous she kept running to the Porta Potti. Meg had told the girl she'd done that at her first show too, that everyone did. Right now Meg was riding Tango in the make-up arena while she coached Allie on Rhubarb. It looked to Nicky like Rhubarb had been shown before. He was working a lot better than Tango.

She snapped photos of Rhubarb and Allie, dressed in jeans and a long-sleeved shirt and Lucy's hat and boots. The girls were the same size, and Lucy had eagerly lent her show clothes and saddle. When Allie rode out of the show ring, looking dazed, clutching a second-place ribbon, Nicky photographed her again.

"You know, you're really a nice person, Meg," Nicky said.

"Don't go telling people that." Meg was sitting on Tango, waiting to go into the Junior Western Pleasure Class. "I think Tango is about to make a fool of me."The horse moved nervously sideways, looking at the animals around him like he'd never seen another horse.

Meg was all business in the show ring. It was amazing to watch her control something so big with a touch of her leg. Her hands were light on the reins, her voice always soft. Tango seemed to know who was in command and except for a little flare-up when he first went into the ring, he responded well. When she made the cut, Meg patted Tango on the neck.

They stopped at Allie's on the way home. "Do you want me to unload Rhubarb?"

Allie, who was sandwiched between them, shook her head. "He's lonely here. Can't I go back to the barn with you and clean stalls and stuff?"

"Nope," Meg said. "We'll take Rhubarb, though. Your dad will want to hear about the show.
