Prior to their departure for Lapland in 1722, twelve students received words of encouragement and instruction from August Hermann Francke for their daily living: from entering into daily conversation with God, to living humbly, and speaking the truth of God from the gospel.

Prayer during travel and at all times.

Abrahamitic walk before God.

Humility, modesty with decorous Parrhesie [openness] toward all men.

Edification of neighbors during travel and at other times.

Shunning all contention while traveling, according to the counsel of Joseph and his brothers.

No unnecessary curiosity, but necessary observation of necessary matters.

In the vocation: the dic cur hic [say: why am I here?].

True denial of self, in particular if one cannot have everything according to one’s own Commodität [comfort] and otherwise according to one’s wish. Again: if one notes that one will be loved and preserved. Again: if better Conditiones [conditions] and promotions are offered.

Shunning dangerous and idle conversation even if it has a good appearance and Praetext [pretext] so as not to be directed into great temptations, sins, and shame.

To shun the supposed Indifferentismus [indifferentism] of the world, if one is invited as a guest and dinner companion or in some other capacity.

No day without food from God’s Word and pouring out the heart before God; both with constant observation of oneself.

To remain with pure tigniden [building] truths; to shun paradoxes, meanings strange and difficult to explain to others.

To fill the mouth with the pure truth, in which is sap, power, and life, from the gospel of Christ, for example, Lutherus redivivus of [Martin] Statius [d. 1655].

To attend to God’s way, not to deny the opportunities to promote the good, and to arm oneself for this with firm faith.

To count each day as the last and, so far as possible, to keep a diary.

Reflection and Discussion

How would you respond to these admonitions?

What types of admonitions or instructions would you offer if you were to send people into the mission field?
