When we got back, Colin was working on his journal. I said, “Did you learn anything new about Elmer Thrash?”

“No.” Colin looked gloomy.

“It’s okay. If he’s using the Dixon Gill name for everything, I’m not surprised there wasn’t anything else out there.”

Pete’s phone rang. He looked at the caller ID with surprise. “It’s Jon.”

Jon Eckhoff was a friend, a homicide detective with LAPD’s Pacific Division whom we’d met during the investigation involving Kevin’s ex-wife. I’d introduced him to Liz, and they’d been dating for about eight months. Jon and Liz came hiking with Pete and me a couple of times a month.

Pete answered. “Hey, Jon. You are? Why? Oh, right. Do you want to come over for dinner?”

That got my attention. I mouthed to Pete, “Jon’s here?”

He nodded at me. “Sure, it’s no trouble.” He gave directions to Steve’s house. “See you then.” He hung up.

“Why is Jon here?”

“Protecting the chain of custody.”

“What?”

“He’ll explain it when he gets here.”

Steve started the grill again. When the doorbell rang about a half hour later, I went to the door. Jon was standing on the porch, grinning. "Didn't think I'd be coming on vacation with you, I bet."

I laughed. "No, that wasn't the plan. What are you doing here?"

"Since LAPD collected the evidence, I brought Dixon Gill's computer and the paperwork to turn over to your FBI and AFOSI investigators. Which I have done."

I led Jon through the house to the back porch. "Did you find anything in LA?"

“There wasn't anything suspicious on site. He lives in a condo at the marina, very fancy but very small. The neighbors say they never see him. We talked to some of the production team for his TV show - they didn't have much to contribute, except that he didn't actually believe any of the alien visitor stuff he preached on the show. He thought it was a huge joke and that his legions of fans were mostly idiots.”

"Whoa. That could be a motive, if one of the idiots found out what he thought about them."

"Maybe. The show people also told us that he was planning something big for the first episode of their new season, and that’s why he was in New Mexico."

“Did they know what he was planning?”

“No. They said he hadn’t given them the details yet. He came out here to scout locations.”

“He hadn’t told the producers of his show what he was doing? That doesn’t sound right.”

“He’s the executive producer. Apparently it’s his show. The rest of the crew makes it happen according to his instructions.”

“His show – meaning?”

“Meaning he pays everyone’s salaries. They all work for Alien Visitor Productions, which, as you found out, is Gill. As is the Conspiracy Network.”

“He owns the whole network?”

“Yep.”

Pete gave a low whistle. “How much does it take to buy a whole network?”

“Not just to buy, but to create. He built the whole thing from scratch.”

I said, “It would take several million dollars, and then several million more to keep it running. Although he is making a lot of money from advertisers.
