CHAPTER NINETEEN

Aldrich

“All I have seen is that every dragon will fight beside you, and protect you. But it’s not you who dies, Emperor, it’s Emil.” Bash and I were walking from the backyard, where all the dragons who were in Black Veil had convened, to the main house.

“And if they were to protect Emil, if we all did?”

He shook his head. “Just like life, death finds a way.” He stopped walking and faced me. “It’s hard to hear, but sometimes heroes must fall for the rest of us to rise. Maybe the reason we can’t find a way to save Emil or you, is because Emil’s death is meant to be.”

“Unacceptable.” I rushed past Bash and into the house. I wouldn’t stand there and listen to a seer wax poetic about the death of my fated mate.

When I stepped inside, I heard Emil’s voice, and like a magnet I was pulled toward it.

He was in the study with Petru, Jayce, and Cain. He appeared angry, and Petru was scowling.

“What happened?” I moved beside Emil and found myself checking him over as if he were physically harmed.

“We ran into a faerie.” Petru didn’t offer more than that, so I looked at Emil.

“Who? What did they say?”

Without preamble, Emil took me in his arms, and the anger and worry that was spinning through me ceased.

“Her message was to offer a trade. Lyra for the emperor,” Petru answered.

“She risked coming out in public for that? Was she alone? What was her name?” Jayce was talking in rapid-fire, but I was curious about those answers.

Emil kissed the top of my head and released me. “Her name was Akuji, and she was powerful enough to freeze Petru in place without effort, so being in public didn’t seem to worry her. And yes, we think she was alone.”

“Why do you say you ‘think’?” Cain’s expression was thoughtful.

Emil crossed his arms over his chest. “Because you all said they can be invisible; therefore, there was a chance she wasn’t alone.”

“We need to tell Sibell and Bash.” Jayce pulled out his cell phone. “She’s probably still with her friends, so I’ll text her.” Jayce looked at me. “Where’s Bash?”

“In the house somewhere, I presume.”

Cain nodded. “I’ll ask Mancy to find him.” Cain left the study and we all stood in silence, waiting for something or someone to come up with an answer.

“You know what I think?” Jayce slid his phone into his pocket. “If this freaky faerie wants to trade, it likely means Lyra isn’t shifting, and there are issues.”

“But don’t they need one of each elemental dragon to make or harness the energy of an emperor dragon?” Emil pursed his lips. “Unless can they just remove the power from you?” he asked me.

“I have no doubt there is a way, but I’ve never seen it done. Therefore I can’t be sure.”

Bash entered the study behind Cain, and Emil and Petru hurriedly filled him in on everything. The more he heard, the more his forehead crinkled, and the more his expression became confused.
