Chapter 20

Nassau Research Facility

Selene was sitting at her desk, poring over Tso’s notes on the alpha dissection, when a Marine knocked on her office door.

“Excuse me, ma’am, you’ve got a Priority One call from the Reagan. It’s Commander Reisner.”

The man handed her a SAT phone then pointed down the hallway towards the exit doors. “You’ll need to be outside to get reception.”

She hopped up, eager to speak with Reisner, wondering if he was calling to say he was able to break away from his teaching duties for a few hours at MacDill to see her when she arrived tomorrow.

Selene followed the young Marine out to the shaded rest area that overlooked the bay.

Pressing the programmed number for central command on the phone, she heard Reisner pick up after the fourth ring.

“Will, I hope you have some good news for me—I know I sure have some exciting news to talk with you about tomorrow.”

Reisner’s voice was raspy, the wind evident in the background amidst a mechanical thumping that resembled the rotors of a helicopter. “I just spoke with the pilot in Nassau. He’s getting the bird ready to fly you to the Reagan.”

She flared an eyebrow. “What—why?”

“Omega One.” Her ribs tightened. She hadn’t heard the code name for Roland Whitmore in months. “You’re serious? You know where he’s at?”

“Yeah, about two feet from me on the floor of the helo. We’re inbound for a Coast Guard Cutter starboard of the Reagan. All those theories that you and Tso had about his abilities and telepathy—well, here’s your chance to see what he’s made of, literally.”

Selene gulped, feeling the need to sit down on a stone bench under a cypress tree. Everything regarding how the super-alphas communicated was now at their fingertips. Roland was the missing link that could help her fill in so many gaps and could possibly help them arrive at a solution for destroying the paras once and for all.

She stood back up, walking to the edge of the veranda and staring at the airfield in the distance, where a Chinook was prepping for takeoff. “I need to grab my laptop and a few things.” She turned, trotting towards the door. “And Tso—he has to be there for this. He’s been working specifically on alpha morphology for months now.”

“Of course; I’ll keep Roland in quarantine on the cutter until you arrive.” His voice lightened. “Oh, and what was it you had to tell me?”

She stopped running, entering her office. She wanted to tell him he was going to become a father, but she wanted to look him in the eyes with her arms wrapped around him. It can wait a few hours.

She grabbed her daypack, jamming in her laptop and dog-eared notepads. “I’ll tell you when I see you. I’ll be there soon.”
