The next morning, while Avery was in the shower and Tobit was downstairs making omelets for them, he heard someone land outside of the house. The others weren’t expected to be back for a few days yet, so he was frowning as he went to the front door and opened it to find Kovu shifting out of his dragon form and shaking out his hair. He looked cold as he shivered there in the drizzling rain, but Tobit didn’t care.

“What are you doing here?” he asked Kovu as he leaned against the doorframe, blocking the other dragon’s path into the house. Kovu was bigger than him, but with Avery sharing his power with Tobit, and the clan growing stronger because of it, Tobit knew he could do some serious damage to Kovu if it came down to that. He hoped it didn’t, and that Kovu would lose interest in them and simply fly away, but if it came to a fight, Tobit wouldn’t back down—not when it meant protecting himself and Avery as well.

Kovu stepped closer to him and Tobit growled, warning him away. “Donovan asked me to come check on you two and see if you need anything. Hunting has been slow, so they’re probably going to be a few more days, but they sent me on ahead, and I’m supposed to stay here with you two until they get back.”

The story might have a grain of truth, as Donovan had sent Oren back to check on him from time to time. But Tobit didn’t believe him for a second, because no one trusted Kovu. He was a traitor, and Tobit knew better than to believe his lies. Or, at least he thought he did, until the wind blew up behind Kovu and drove his scent straight toward Tobit.

He smelled like the others, along with the heavy musk of sex. “You’ve been with them?” Tobit couldn’t believe that his clan could be so stupid as to fall for Kovu’s tricks and lies.

Kovu nodded easily. He looked proud of what he’d done. “Yes. I’m one of yours now, if you’ll have me. Or if you’ll let me inside so we can talk, at least.”

Tobit glared at him. Then he checked the strands. Sometime in the night, they’d all become closer. He wanted to curse, because that was a sure sign that Kovu had been telling him the truth, which meant that the others needed to get their heads examined. But it also meant he couldn’t deny Kovu a place in the house, because it was his house now, too. With a sigh, he stepped away from the door and went back to the kitchen.

“I’m making omelets. Do you want one?” Tobit tried not to growl at Kovu, but it didn’t work out all that well.

Kovu, seemingly oblivious to how much Tobit really did not want him there, sat down at the table in the empty spot between the two places Tobit had set for himself and Avery. “Yes, please.”

Tobit nodded and started on another one.
