I stared into his blue-and-gray eyes, and gasped. Tobin’s words made me want to hear what this tree could tell me even more! There was so much we needed to learn. Another dimension in the world around me had just opened up. Knowing that all living things had some form of consciousness and could communicate blew my mind.

Still staring into those dreamy eyes, I groped for the words. “You mean…you can talk to trees? Plants?” He nodded. “And…animals? You can talk to animals too?”

He broke into a merry grin. “Don’t forget insects! Oh, the conversations one can have with the birds and the bees and the flowers and the trees!”

I blinked at him. I had heard that phrase before. When I was a kid, some Sunday mornings when Dad would get up, he’d hum a song, “Let me tell you ’bout the birds and the bees and the flowers and the trees…” Ewww! Dad and Mom, the night before…on Saturday night… Ewwww!

Tobin laughed lightly at the look on my face like he could read my mind. I grabbed his wrists and pulled myself away from the tree.

Even so, my mind was reeling over this. I lifted my head and turned in a circle, my head upturned taking in the forest.

Each leaf was part of a plant that could speak to Elves. The flowers at the bases of the trees, the ant crawling up the bark, and even the grubs and bugs under my feet in the forest loam. They could speak to the Elves!

My ears pricked at the sound of a bird making a quick song. Not just birds, but also the squirrels, raccoons, the deer…all these creatures… If the Elves could speak to them, what could we learn from them?

The last few weeks had blown apart—no, that’s not right—exploded the way I looked at the world. From the moment when we’d first discovered the Fae and all the other Mythicals, the world was not the same. There was a new richness, so much so, the world was new to me all over again. In the same moment when I’d been saved from cancer’s hungry maw, I was also made a Witch. And the world was never the same.

Now? Now from what Tobin had said, the world was once again new to me!

I felt like a three-year-old; everything around me was new, calling to me to explore. I closed my eyes, trying with all my might to tap into something—anything! —a hum or vibration thrumming through my fingers. And by this time, I knew these fingers were capable of some pretty awesome stuff. So why not get attuned with what the trees had to say.

But the fast thud of footsteps brought that to a halt. I turned to abandon my tree efforts just in time to see Mike the Vampire come to a halt next to Maren. Part of me was relieved to see him and part of me still harbored reservations.

He was a Vampire after all and his feelings for my sister were pretty evident.
