Chapter 19
I started to come to, blinking several times before I realized there was no light whatsoever. But even in the silent darkness, I could sense I wasnât alone.
âWhoâs there?â I rasped, struggling to find my voice. How long had I been out? I had so many questions, but first thing was first. âShow yourself. I know somebody isââ My hand flared with pain when I tried to push up off the ground. But I also noticed that my fingers had been set in place and bandaged.
Torchlight flared, illuminating the face of a woman standing only a few feet away from me. She didnât speak, and we just stared at each other in silence. After a few moments, I raised my bandaged hand. âThank you?â I said, assuming she was the one who fixed me up. Still, she said nothing.
One by one, more torches flared up around the room, their flickering light revealing more of the chamber and who was here with me. There were three women in total, and one man down on the floor near the feet of the lady who I first saw. I recognized him.
âThis is the one?â The black-haired woman glanced down at Keenan, the man I rescued from execution back at the fairy village.
âMmm... Mmm,â he hummed his agreement. Curled up around her feet like a cat, he kept constantly licking her black boots in long, smooth strokes. I swore I could hear him purring. âYes, Great Elder,â he cooed. âThis is the man I told you about.â He went right back to his incessant licking like her boot was made of sugar.
âKeenan?â I said, no longer even sure if that was his real name. âThat was you, wasnât it? Youâre the one who pulled me out of that chamber.â Everything had happened so fast, but now that I saw him again, I was sure of it.
âMmm... Mmm...â He nodded, still licking her boot.
âThank you.â I laughed softly. âIt just doesnât quite say it, does it?â I said, repeating what he said to me after I saved him. He smiled at the private joke.
I looked around at what I now took to be some sort of cave. There was no actual floor save for the soft dirt beneath my feet, and the rocky black walls were jagged and uneven. The three ladies were a lot more fun to look at, but as of yet, I still couldnât decide if they were my rescuers or my captors.
I guessed time would tell.
âUm...hi.â I rotated my head, acknowledging each woman in turn. âMy name isââ The redhead on my left flashed in on me with impossible speed, driving her knee right into the side of my ribs. All the air fled from my lungs in a sharp wheeze, and I collapsed where I stood.
Captors it is. Got it.
âSilence, human!â she said, glaring down at me as I writhed on the floor, clutching my side. âYou will speak only when spoken to.â Damn, this bitch could sure pack a wallop.
