Chapter
Eleven
Doug arrived on time to pick up Sybil, and when she climbed in his truck a short time later, she felt a wave of relief to be out of the house.
As the sun dipped behind the mountains, Doug turned on the headlights. Sybil sighed. The surrounding trees crowded the road. Bigger. Begging her to stay.
No. No. Iâm not staying.
âYou okay?â Doug asked.
She went into cover mode, not wanting him to comprehend her real thoughts. âOf course.â
âYeah.â Doubt filled his voice. âWhy donât I believe you? That was a heavy sigh.â
She froze, briefly surprised. It gave her a second to remember that she trusted him. âYouâre right, it was. This house...itâs just...â
What could she say?
âWeird?â he ventured.
She glanced over at him as he gave her a quick wry smile.
âThatâs a good name for it.â She shrugged and returned her gaze to the road. The encroaching night also gave her the willies, and she hated that. âI donât know what to make of it.â Her curiosity got the better of her. âWhat do you think is wrong with that house?â
He didnât speak right away.
âWish I knew,â he finally said.
âYou think weâre a bunch of nuts, donât you?â
She glanced at him and noted his big grin.
âYouâre not crazy. None of you are. At least I donât think so,â he said. âEver since I came up here after my uncle died, Iâve thought about selling the cabin.â
âWhy?â
âAt first I thought I was irrational, too. My cabin isnât haunted. But outside the cabin...in the woods, things feel thick. Heavy. As if the entire place is alive. Iâve been in a lot of forests and never felt what I do in this area.â
She drew in a slow breath, relieved. âThe house is like that. And the woods right around it. I knew it from the first day I saw the trees.â
âRight? The tree trunks are wild.â
âIâm sure scientists will figure it out some day,â she said.
âMaybe. You wanted to say more about the house.â
She bit her lower lip. âYou wouldnât believe me.â
âTry me.â
She winced. âYeah, if I do that, youâll turn this truck around, take me back to the house, and never talk to me again.â
âYouâre assuming a lot.â
She rubbed her arms, cold even when she wore outerwear appropriate for the weather. âI do that a lot, just like everyone else. But sometimes what I assume is completely right.â
Oh, Sybil. Shut up.
No. No, I wonât.
âLetâs back up a bit,â he said, his voice steady. âI meant youâre assuming a lot about what Iâll think if youâre up front with me.â
âWell, you were a cop. Most cops are skeptical about stuff like this.â
âTrue. And I am, too.â
âI rest my case.â
He laughed. âSybil, come on. Youâre an open-minded woman. You know that not all people in a certain profession are the same. Yeah, some cops are skeptical. Many people in the military are, too. But weâre human, like anyone else.â
Now youâve done it, Sybil. You didnât come clean with him, and now youâve pissed him off.
Shame touched her. Shame for making assumptions and not being straight with him.
