Jurgen Steiner, Will Hessler and Michael Reiner had left in Jurgen’s car. Herman quietly obeyed orders and found the body bag in Reiner’s van. As he was pulling it out Herman noticed there were three of them. The young man paused for a moment and then pushed it out of his mind. Herman knew that when he started overthinking things he had a tendency to get himself into trouble. Thinking wasn’t his job, obeying orders was.
A wind blew across the wharf as he walked back to the office and closed the door behind him. It was a strange thing he thought, seeing that man die like that. Herman didn’t know much about Jacob Mitzak, but from the little Jurgen Steiner had said about him, Herman knew that this man was a hardened killer, with a body count in his wake that most likely numbered in the hundreds. So much mayhem caused by just one man, and yet he had died so simply. This made Herman wonder how he would die? It had always been a thought in the back of his head that this was war, that what they were doing was waging a war against the Jews and their white conspirators. In any war casualties were expected, and it was always possible Herman would be one of them.
Herman stood in the quiet of the office and looked down at Jacob lying motionless, tied to the chair. No rise and fall of his chest, no nothing. This man was as dead as the proverbial doornail.
Shaking out the body bag Herman laid it on the floor and then took a knee next to Jacob’s body. He would have to cut him loose, so he retrieved a knife from his boot and began sawing the ropes from his hands. Herman began to whistle a tune as he did this and made short work of the bindings.
His wrist hurt. This was the first thing that Herman thought. He then realized that it hurt because it was broken. Herman’s wrist was broken, and he was upside down. Herman’s wrist was broken, and he was upside down with the strongest hand he had ever felt on his throat.
Jacob slid the blade of the knife into the soft space below Herman’s jaw, looking into the young man’s terrified eyes as blood began to spill out of his mouth.
“Shh. Be quiet. It’s okay.” Jacob whispered. “It’s almost over, it’s almost over.”
Herman was trying to move his jaw, but the blade of the knife had locked it into place as the tip slowly entered his brainstem. Herman’s eyes began to flutter violently as his body jerked beneath Jacob’s full weight.
“It’s okay. Be quiet. Go to sleep.”
Herman’s legs kicked as the light in his eyes went out, more blood spilled from his mouth, and finally he slept forever.
Sliding the knife back out Jacob reached back and cut his feet loose from the overturned chair that he had still been tied to.
Looking down at Herman’s dead face Jacob wiped the knife off on the boy’s shirt and then slid it into his belt.
