Chapter 11
A small gasp escaped when I stepped out on the other side of the second portal. Weâd gone into that hallway Jaden, Wade, and I had seen, and then Medar had chosen a door. Iâd thought Iâd seen beauty on Earth, and a different kind of beauty here when weâd come out of the tunnel, but nothing Iâd ever seen compared to this.
We were super high in the air, standing on a platform made of flowering woven vines and branches. Ornate doors were embedded in the massive trunks of the trees that towered above us, going so high I couldnât see the tops. I scooted over to the edge, but I couldnât see beyond the limbs and leaves below us to the ground. Somehow I knew though, we were way up there.
âI thought the Fae Council met in some clearing or glade or whatever,â I said to no one in particular, backing away from the edge.
âNot for hundreds of years now.â Medar had come through the portal behind me and I hadnât noticed. âThat was before the current way we govern. Back then the King of the Faerie Court made all the decisions, with the Council only there to advise him. But there is wisdom in the many over the one, so now the Council makes most of the rulings, with the King carrying them out.â
I couldnât really care less about how the fae were ruled.
The guards snapped into formation around me, boxing me in with one on each corner. Talk about uncomfortable. What did they expect me to do, throw myself over the edge?
âThis way,â Medar said politely. He marched off toward one of the trees, then moved on to a small woven walkway that went around the side.
Okay, this was really poorly designed. No railings? Someone could totally plunge to their death. Wait! Maybe this was my chance to escape. I skootched over and looked down. Lots of branches. Would these trees help me?
Hey, anyone out there?
I waited for a second. That was dumb. It wasnât like they talked to me.
If youâre willing to help, give me a sign. Wave a branch or something.
No movement. Could these trees not hear me? Or could they, but they werenât a fan for some reason? If I threw myself over the edge, would they help me?
That seemed like something I should know before I tried it.
We came around the tree and I craned my neck to see beyond the guard. This spot could almost be a clearing on the forest floor. The footing was covered in live leaves, walls formed by interwoven vines with a gorgeous array of flowers, and five thrones set at the other end, made out of living polished branches.
So this was it. No time for processing, no long wait before a trial like back with the humans. They found out who I was and within an hour, I was standing before the Council.
The Faerie Council looked about what I would have expected them to, if Iâd stopped to think about it.
