Chapter Seventeen

“Jamie! What happened to you?” Zoe noticed with undisguised envy that Jamie was walking normally. Her feet were not crippled and cruelly bound as hers and Baozhai’s were.

The men stared after Jamie for a moment then they crouched down and huddled together, dark heads close together as they whispered among themselves. Cheng sipped at his tea as he watched Jamie in amusement. Baozhai continued to look down at the ground, as still and uncomplaining as a statue.

Jamie flung herself down on the ground beside Zoe. “Idiots,” she muttered. “Why would I want to steal from them?”

“What happened to you on the Hindenburg? I was looking everywhere for you. Where did you go?” Zoe was anxious to fill in the gaps.

Jamie was now staring at Zoe’s tiny feet. “Oh my goodness, Zoe. Look at your feet! They’re tiny! Do they hurt?” She reached out and poked a curious finger at Zoe’s little red-slippered foot.

Zoe shifted her feet a little, out of reach of Jamie’s prodding finger. “Yes, it does hurt. And it hurts when you poke them. And the binding makes it really hard to walk. But tell me where you went after you left the dining room in the Hindeburg? I couldn’t find you and then the explosion happened.”

Jamie was now looking over to where Baozhai was crouched, head bowed, while Cheng drunk his tea. “What is she doing?” she whispered.

“That’s Baozhai and her brother Cheng. Women are supposed to wait on the men like servants. Women have very little rights here, just like in the other times we’ve visited. Jamie, would you please tell me what happened on the Hindenburg?” she pleaded.

“Oh. I left the dining room to try and find a bathroom. One of the stewards pointed me towards it and I was washing my hands when everything exploded. I arrived through the aperture into the middle of a mucky rice field. I wondered where you were.” She looked at Zoe. “I thought maybe you’d been lucky enough to be sent home and I was annoyed that you might have found your way back without me.”

“No, no such luck. I thought the same thing about you. Well, at least we now know that even if we aren’t together when the aperture opens we still get sent to the same place.” Zoe glanced across the courtyard. “What are they doing now?”

The men who had bought Jamie to the courtyard had finished conferring. One of them stood up and stepped purposefully towards where the girls were sitting against the side of the hut. “Stand up,” he ordered Jamie. “You must come with us. You must be punished for stealing from us.”

Jamie rolled her eyes and remained sitting where she was. “I already told you, I wasn’t stealing anything. And no, I’m not coming with you. You’ll have to make me.”

“Sssssh, Jamie,” Zoe hissed. “Don’t talk to them like that. You’ll only make them angry.”

Jamie turned to her friend. “So what if I make them angry? We already know that as soon as we’re in danger we’ll be moved on.
