JOHN REILLY HAD RETIRED to a little inland lake just outside of Munising, about three miles from the enormous lake itself. Elle followed the GPS, relieved when it held and she pulled onto a long, sloping drive that wound through the woods and dead ended at a little ranch-style house with a wrap-around, gray porch that faced out over Little Stuart Lake. John’s vehicle was parked in the drive, the one-car garage closed. There was no answer when she knocked.

But the gray of early morning had peeled back to reveal blue skies and sun for a change, and Elle played a hunch. She circled the house to the back and took the stairs down to a lovely dock that extended close to forty feet out into the lake. At the end, on a comfortable-looking bench, sat John. Two poles sat in mounts on the rail, lines dipping into the cold water. John sat, his chin tipped forward onto his chest, a thick wool lap blanket across his knees as he lightly snored. A thick wool cap sat slightly askew, the earmuffs pulled down over his ears and buttoned beneath his chin.

She almost hated to wake him up. Casually, she sat down next to him and looked out over the lake, the surface smooth and dark all the way to the other side. It was an idyllic setting, and she could easily see why he’d chosen to purchase property there for his retirement.

“How long you been sitting there watching me with my mouth dangling open? I was likely drooling.”

Elle turned and looked at him. “Just a few minutes. I figure you earned the right.”

He lifted the blanket just a little, and Elle was surprised to see the gleam of metal on his lap. “Careful who you sit next to and wake up, girlie. I’m a mite trigger happy in my retirement these days, old habits and all.”

Her brows rose. “Glad I didn’t say boo.”

“Me, too.”

“Care to introduce yourself, seeing as how you’re trespassing on private property without permission?” The words were gruff, but they lacked heat.

Elle smiled and nodded towards the poles. “Any luck?”

“I’d have to have bait on the other end of the line for that. If I catch them, I have to clean them, and my freezer is already full. You look familiar, come to think of it.”

“Name’s Elle Adams. I was in the back at the meeting you attended in Veil Falls a few days ago. The old case you worked right before you retired. It was me that called and asked you to join us.”

He didn’t look happy to be reminded of it. “That doesn’t really tell me squat about why you’re here.”

“I’m looking into the case again, helping Allen Peabody out, and seeing if I can dig up any more information to find a killer.”

“I see.” It was all he said. The flash of irritation in old eyes said it wasn’t all he was thinking.

“I paid a visit to Scottie Lind this morning.”

He gave an unexpected snort of laughter at that.
