My Eighteenth Winter

As the wedding begins, I keep my head lowered while the Priest says prayers and blessings over us, invoking our vows. When I must speak, I whisper so that the Northern King has to lean in close to hear me.

All decked in wedding finery, the Northern King looks younger than I remember. His skin isn't wrinkled except for a crease along his forehead and little lines at the corners of his eyes and mouth. He hasn't lost the hair on the top of his head, but there is a crown of gray under his real crown. A red gemstone heart hangs around his neck, secured with a thick cord of black leather. He isn't wearing his late wife's heart anymore. I don't even know what kind of gemstone his own heart is carved from.

The Priest finishes blessing us and nods to the Northern King to lift my veil so we can kiss and exchange hearts as is the custom.

The Northern King raises the gauzy fabric, and when his hands freeze, I smirk at the horror that fills his gaze.
