HONEY BUNNY

My candy obsession has only one rival—my love for rabbits. I have more than 3,000 rabbit items in my collection, from stuffed animals, plates, and stationery to hand towels and cookie jars. They definitely seem to multiply in my house! My rabbit collection started when I was three years old, when my dad brought back a pink stuffed Steiff rabbit from Europe. This bunny was taller than I was—to me, it was literally larger than life. I would drag it everywhere by its arms, until the cotton filling started to tear through. At that point, my mom gave me “the baby” of this rabbit—a mini plush version that was much easier to carry around. I slept with it every night.

However, the best addition to my rabbit collection came from my parents when I was nine: two real pet bunnies. One was black and one was white, both with silky fur and cute, soulful brown eyes. I immediately named them Chocolate and Vanilla (ironic, right?). And oddly enough, they even shared my love for sweets. It was Oreos—not typical bunny food like lettuce or carrots—that enabled me to lure them from their grassy pen into their cages at night.

I have honored my pet rabbits Chocolate and Vanilla by making them the Dylan’s Candy Bar Mascots. Chocolate the Bunny is a 10-foot rabbit sculpture covered in candy foil and looks like it’s made of real chocolate. Customers often pose for pictures with him and then try to eat him, since he seems quite edible. Chocolate and Vanilla have become paraphernalia for my company, in plush, T-shirts, lollipops, and chocolate figurines.

To me, and as evident in Dylan’s Candy Bar and many other entertainment and advertising companies, rabbits are more than just synonymous with Easter. Bunnies can embody so many different personalities, from wild and wacky (Bugs Bunny, Trix Rabbit) to graceful, sexy, and seductive (Jessica Rabbit and the ever-famous Playboy Bunny!). In many cultures, rabbits usher in good luck. They also represent happiness, energy, speed, resilience, and springtime, and they serve as a reminder to always maintain a youthful spirit and have a spring in your step.
