Faults and Failings

Dad could be impatient, mostly with himself, particularly when farm machinery broke down during harvest time or when herds of cattle broke loose. At these times we knew to stay out of his path. Ultimately though, for Dad, patience reigned over impatience. Raising eight children was no easy task and we did our share of picking on each other and having arguments over silly things. Dad was incredibly patient with our faults and failings; and when anyone felt unjustly treated, Dad’s kindness and compassion always came through.

The Kingdom is within…

The image of a child is used by Jesus to highlight our transformed personalities when we take on a child’s freedom from any false, mask-like front. “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever becomes humble like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” (Matt 18:3-4) There is no split between appearance (outside) and reality (inside). What is reflected on the outside is felt within. This gift was readily discernible in Dad and affirmed by neighbors, relatives, and friends. He was a firm believer of the dictum: “the Kingdom is within.” Dad’s redemption was a source of good news and truly a benefit for other.
